Pro Bowl History

The Pro Bowl has been a thing for decades and has evolved over time, but did you know NFL used to compete against the College All-Star team? They would win games throughout the 30s and 40s against the Chicago Bears, including a 16-0 victory in 1947 in front of 105,840 crazed fans.

By 1955, the College All-Star team owned a 7-13-2 record. However, they would win just two more games after that with the final win coming over the Vince Lombardi-led Green Bay Packers in 1963. After the game, Lombardi said he had never been more embarrassed as a head coach.

The final game came in 1976 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game was called due to lightning and a 24-0 Steeler leader with a riotous crowd. It’s crazy to think anything like this would happen today with so much money involved, but it was definitely a thing.

The 2020 Pro Bowl is a pointless game for many, including Jess Place, Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann, and myself in the Something Something Broncos podcast above. The rules do not inspire much competition and it has become more of a scrimmage than anything.

Even so, we often watch anyway to see our favorite Denver Broncos players make a few plays and have a good time. Thankfully, the Pro Bowl went back to the AFC vs. NFC format so our two players will be playing together on the same team. The AFC currently is riding a three-game winning streak, which I’d like to see continue.

Here’s a question for the comments section and one we discussed heavily in our podcast. What could the NFL do to improve the Pro Bowl format and make it a game that matters to fans again? Or should they even try?
